After serving as the 34th Governor of Arkansas, Sid McMath, with Henry Woods and Leland Leatherman, founded McMath Woods. The law firm soon gained a state-wide reputation for representing Arkansans in personal injury cases. Both McMath and Woods were admitted to the prestigious Inner Circle of Advocates, a national organization that recognizes only two lawyers from each state as among The Top 100 Best Plaintiffs Lawyers in the U.S.
A 23-year-old worker was severely injured due in part to the negligence of a construction firm that was building a dam on the Arkansas River near Pine Bluff. The case escalated to federal court where Sid McMath implored the jury “to let justice flow like a mighty river”. They did, awarding what was at the time, the largest-ever admiralty personal injury verdict in the court’s history.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued a warning to Tyson Foods Inc. related to waste from its chicken processing plant that was contaminating groundwater in Green Forest, AR. After little changed, in 1987 McMath Woods sued Tyson, resulting in an award of damages for citizens affected and a formal finding that Tyson had violated the Clean Water Act.
A 21-year old Army private from Prescott, AR was electrocuted while in basic training at Fort Benning in Georgia. McMath Woods represented the victim’s estate and uncovered that the maintenance contractor for the base, Shaw Industries, shared fault for the incident with the Army. The jury awarded the victim’s estate a $6.5 million verdict.
Lase Med Inc. was advertising they could cure breast cancer without medical evidence to support the claim, deceiving the public and hopeful patients. McMath Woods investigated, engaged expert oncologists, and sued the corporation on behalf of an affected Arkansas resident. The jury found the corporation guilty of fraudulent and deceptive advertising practices and awarded $2.5 million in damages.
Following in the great tradition of the McMath Woods legacy, today the firm’s attorney partners are regularly recognized for legal excellence.
